We have eaten many breakfasts at BOS, but were reluctant to try it for dinner. This time, we were staying at the hotel for several days, and needed a dinner close to the theater venue, where we could access the skywalk, and found most of our choices were already booked because of the sold out performance at the Civic Center. OpenTable offered BOS, and we're glad we accepted. The food was gently prepared, extremely well-plated, and served with a smile. The menu was small but true to its mission (corn was offered in several ways), and the final tab was reasonable. The only thing that kept us from a fifth star for atmosphere was the coffee shop lighting, decor and seating. Change the booth tables and the lighting and get that fifth star!

Definitely a great spot for a leisurely downtown breakfast. As others mentioned, the signage is very easy to miss. But once inside the lobby, BOS is immediately to your right. The hostess/waitress was pulling double duty, and did a rocking job. Granted, it was a weekday and they weren't busy. There is breakfast buffet available, however, that sounds like the last thing I'd ever opt to do, given the fact the menu looks amazing. I wanted everything!! Fluffy Belgian waffles? Iowa eggs benedict? Magical sounding french toast? I was lame and went the yogurt and granola route, since was pacing myself for a food marathon that day. Coffee was hot & delicious. Service was sweet & attentive. Prices are kind of ridiculously high. I understand it's located in a hotel, but still. $10 for most egg dishes? Save your dough & go to La Mie.

Was there was dinner on a Tuesday. It was empty. It's in the renaissance hotel and the signage from the street is small, easy to miss. I got a salad which was good but nothing special. The ambience was ok. The service was ok. The good was ok. Not a place that I would go back to over and over but if I were staying in the hotel it would be adequate and convenient

Lunch Buffet is great with pasta station and salad bar. Other food off the menus are great. One of the best sweet potato fries! Dinner is also wonderful. It has been opened for about 2 yrs now and they are better every time I return.

Underwhelming. Food was okay. Service was good. Atmosphere was okay. The nicest thing I can say about the restaurant is that it exists. I could have recreated the meal at home.

This is strictly for Monihan's Speakeasy. Speakeasy is a misnomer. If you're advertising to out of town guests (yes, you're in a hotel), you should be featuring the local flavor. In other words, carry Templeton Rye. If it hasn't been stocked there in 3 months, please remove it from the menu. And if the guy who makes Limoncello doesn't work there anymore so that's not available either, please remove that from the menu. Oh, and be aware of the dice roll. While a fun concept, neither roll worked in our favor.

The fact that it was one of very few places I could get a reservation at the last minute over Valentine's Day weekend should have been my first clue. Basically, if you like average Applebee's food at high end restaurant prices, this is your joint. Overall, BOS is just a very odd place. Everything just seems a bit...off. The Savery's lobby is cool and modern. The sign on BOS is the same. Minimalist with clean lines. Walking through the door is like a time warp to...I'm not sure where. The salt & pepper shakers match the modern look of the lobby, but I guess they decided that was enough. The outdated turquoise booths, the giant heavy gilded light fixtures and the strange sandy/concrete relief art on were outdated and strange. And to boot, one of the stall doors in the ladies room was broken. The obvious answer to dealing with it is to attach a terry cloth shower curtain as a door. Which is something you'd see at maybe a pool snack bar. Not a "high end" restaurant. Gross. On to the food and service. We were seated immediately in the less than half filled restaurant. Then waited 10-15 minutes before anyone acknowledged our presence. We eventually got our drinks and decided go ahead and order as we weren't sure how long it'd be until we'd see our waitress again. And this point I'll mention again, the restaurant was less than half full, however, the waitstaff seemed harried and stressed as if it were a full house. We waited another fifteen minutes or so and I finally flagged down a waitperson and asked for a bread basket. Upon arrival, the warm bread and compound butter looked delicious. It actually tasted like...nothing. No flavor whatsoever. Main course. I order the prosciutto wrapped scallops, prosciutto and scallops being two of my favorite things ever. This dish...did not work. The prosciutto was really thick and there was just too much of it. So much, that it completely overpowered the scallop. It was insanely salty, which yeah, pork tends to be, but perhaps if it were thinner cut? Regardless, I removed all of it and didn't eat it at all. The scallops were cooked adequately, but didn't have much flavor other than salt. The jalapeno creamed corn wasn't too bad, though the corn was a little chewy. The fried leaks were actually pretty nice. My husband got the pepper crusted steak. His description of the dish was "there is pepper on it." So, not so much a pepper crust. Just some random pepper. The steak itself had very little flavor and the dish needed some kind of sauce or jus for both the steak and the potatoes. Really good mashed potatoes don't necessarily need to be bogged down by a sauce or jus, but these were average clumpy mashed potatoes, so they did. After being completely disappointed by our main courses, I'm not sure why we even bothered with desert. We ordered the strawberry champagne creme brulee. The flavor was good, but the custard hadn't set, so it was basically runny pudding with burnt sugar on top. Per their website, the concept features local products. Nothing local was ever mentioned by any of the waitstaff, and they only seemed to have a vague idea of what the specials were. Was it the worst dining experience I've ever had. No. Not even close. I think the best way to describe it would be disappointing. Had I paid $35-40 for this dinner, I wouldn't have complained. But at over $80, it really was pretty bad. And the service, was just not good. And I still can't figure out what all the servers were so exasperated about. I will not be returning to BOS nor would I recommend it to a friend.

I had dinner here just last night, and I was a bit let down. The service was just above standard, the restaurant's ambiance was okay - felt like using 6 inch voices during dinner, however, the fact that diners were scarce could have also been a factor. Friends and I shared dinner, for appetizers, we had their onion rings and seared tuna - both were pretty delicious, but when can you ever go wrong with onion rings??? For dinner we had braised short ribs (the best dish we had), Truffle-oil vegetable risotto, and their waldorf salad. The braised short ribs were delicious, however, their risotto fell a bit flat...and HEAVY for me. For dessert, we opted for their pistacio creme brulee, which left me unimpressed. Nonetheless, a Thursday night's dinner isn't the best time to see this restaurant shine - but I'm definitely open to giving Bos a second try and looking forward to a better dining experience.

I've eaten here a couple of times for lunch. The food is fine--basic bar and grill type sandwiches and salads. The restaurant seems to try to advertise themselves as upscale, but this place is far from it. We stopped in over the weekend for a quiet drink before going to a show at the Civic Center. The place was dead--barely anyone there, and no food coming out. Yet the waitresses were as stressed as could be, and we waited for a long time for service. I sent my first glass of wine back due to how dirty the glass was. The second glass was almost just as bad--covered in spots and could feel the soap residue. It was gross.

Pretty good, the food is good but spendy, some local beers on tap, the speakeasy bar is cool and retro...not my fav place, but a solid hotel bar/eatery. FYI they are remodeling this soon...

We went here for Valentines day, mostly because it was one of the only places we could get a reservation. They had a valentines menu, but we opted to order off their regular menu. We had the chips and corn dip, which was perfect, especially for the price. House salads, pretty standard ho hum side salad.my hubs had the pot pie, which he really liked and I had the gnocchi carbonara. I've never seen this type of gnocchi, which was much more like regular pasta, and the carbonara was definitely not traditional. Nevertheless it was tasty and hot so I wouldn't knock any stars for that, just not what I expected. It's true, the service is the worst part. Our waitress took her time getting to us and then when she did she told us she had "some things to do" and would be back. Uh, you could have probably have at least taken our drink orders. They didn't seem short staffed, so I'm not sure what the deal is. So if you don't mind that, you'll probably have no problem. I did see the chef come out and talk to a few tables (but not ours), which was a nice sign. Prices are definitely a little higher than we would usually pay for this type of dinner (neither entree was a cut of meat or fish), but we'll probably be back at some point.

On arriving at BOS, we were met by a hostess who stood at an overtall lectern-type stand. Only the part of her head above her nose was visible, but she pleasantly offered to seat us -- they need to get the poor girl a step or cut a foot off of the bottom of the stand. The dining room is pretty, though the relief on the wall seems a little bit dated. The space is uncrowded and comfortable, and feels somewhat elegant. There was some sort of a stain on the white cloth covering our table, which I would have noticed if I had been setting the table. At one point a server had to retrieve a bottle of wine from a rack along the wall. She couldn't see the bottles and couldn't reach the bottle when she figured out which one was correct - was this place designed by a particularly tall person, or is someone just having a laugh at the staff? Anyway, when I opened the menu at BOS, I was confused. Short ribs, sea bass, and... meatloaf and reuben. What to think? Since the restaurant is in one of the nicer hotels in Des Moines, it seems that they are trying to cater both to people who want fine dining, as well as those who want a taste of Iowa without leaving the city. I'm not sure it works, but I guess that's their call. We ordered the sea bass and the rachel (a reuben made with turkey instead of corned beef). The sea bass was excellent. It came atop some perfectly cooked sauteed spinach and white beans in a sausage sauce. It sounds like an odd combination, but it worked. My wife's reuben was less wonderful. The bread was soggy - like someone didn't properly drain the sauerkraut, and less cooked than it might have been. The turkey was pretty good, but the whole package disappointed a bit. Accompanying were very good (house made?) fries. We would have had dessert, but then there was the service... What started off well, turned in to unattentiveness. There was a gentleman (dining room manager) who filled in for our waitress, but still... For some reason our waitress did manage to make an appearance and ground some pepper onto our table - thinking we didn't know how to operate the grinders on the table - this seemed weird. When we were finished, the waitress asked if we would like desert. We asked what they had. She responded that she would bring over a tray. The next thing we knew the check was on our table. We never saw or heard about dessert. Restaurant service in Des Moines is pretty-much always sub-par, but this was sub-sub-par. Prices aren't low at BOS, and more consistency would be necessary to put this our list of places to come more than once.

This place is fantastic. Very comfortable and enjoyable. Great addition to downtown dining. The menu with a Midwest flare is a nice touch. And it's not just a niche; they really prepare these items well. The head chef often stops by the table to make sure all is well. Such a gentleman. And by the way, nothing beats a giant warm cookie and ice cream for dessert.
